The 5151 Terminal Road project was a major renovation to the existing building at this address which was being upgraded to suit the new building owner’s requirements.
Marid Industries partnered with EllisDon to modernize the structure. The main focus of this project was the new pedway over Lower Water Street to connect the buildings on opposite sides of this busy thoroughfare in Halifax’s South End.
Marid’s engineering department worked closely with EllisDon to ensure the large sections of pedway would be able to be shipped to site and assembled with a limited amount of space in this downtown setting. The Units were fabricated and shipped in the largest practical sections to allow them to travel the city streets without any major traffic interruptions.
The pedway was shipped in 4 sections and pre-assembled on the site into 2 larger sections ready for erecting with the floor deck and fall arrest cables pre-installed prior to lifting. The 2 erected sections were respectively 117 feet long weighing approximately 48,000 lbs and 98 feet long weighing approximately 40,000 lbs when hoisted.
The installation work proceeded with 2 heavy cranes and a closed road on a Sunday morning to minimize the impact to the local traffic, and within a half day the skeleton of the pedway was in the air. The careful coordination by everyone involved allowed for the successful and safe completion of the project.
