Cavendish Farms decided that they needed 2 new potato storage warehouses in April, 2017. The warehouses also needed to be complete in time for potato harvest that fall.
A pre-engineered structure was considered, but the delivery timeline was too long for the client and there was not enough flexibility to accommodate the client’s needs for state of the art potato storage and humidity control. By the end of May, an agreement was reached and Marid proceeded immediately with detailed design and material procurement.
The Marid engineering team worked with the client and other disciplines to design and coordinate details for ventilation, power distribution and conditioning of the interior environment. Having control over the structural design permitted Marid to specifically design and detail the structure to optimize and standardize details and pieces, streamlining fabrication and erection.
Erection began on July 2, 2017, 2 months after Marid was given approval to proceed, a timeline that would have been almost impossible to match with a “design-bid-build” approach. Site activities were carefully coordinated with the fabrication, galvanizing, precast and IMP panel installation schedules, resulting in a safer, more productive and lean jobsite.
Erection wrapped up in late summer followed by installation of custom potato retention doors. The buildings were completed on schedule and ready to receive potatoes on October 1, 2017.
